We are happy to provide resources, photos, articles, audio, and video of the musical upon request to assist creators in telling the story of this show. Interviews

The RARE Artistic Co-Directors are always open to interviews, whether written or recorded. We are also able to facilitate connections with the Raggedy Ann or Rag Dolly casts with whom we have worked. If you are interested in speaking with us, original 1984–86 Raggedy Ann cast members, or revival cast members, please reach out with the details of your project!

Rag Dolly Music Requests

We may be able to provide sheet music for personal use and free performances. Please send us an email with your request, including the song(s) and the name of the event or performance.

Rag Dolly Licensing Requests

We are currently looking for companies to produce workshops with! RARE Theatricals is especially interested in collaborating with school and youth theaters interested in performing staged readings or concerts of Rag Dolly. We are seeking companies that are ready to play and experiment, to take the material in different directions, and perhaps even surprise us a little!

The revised Rag Dolly script is available in its workshop form and includes the libretto and incidental music scored for vocals with piano accompaniment. Workshops must be free to attend.

In return, we ask that documentation of the workshop performance be provided to RARE Theatricals. This includes the names of the cast and crew, dates and times, location, and audience estimates for us to record. Additionally, either photos, videos, or director's notes must be provided privately for our directing and writing team to reference in the revival process.

For producers or production companies interested in a full-scale staging, we would love to discuss the future of Rag Dolly. Please send us an email, and we can talk about our projected plans to graduate from workshops.

Script & Character Info

In Rag Dolly, a little girl named Marcella is dying of a mysterious illness. Her father makes her a rag doll to comfort her, and his stories of the doll come to life in her dreams to guide her through her grief and fear. Marcella and her new friends confront wolves, witches, and incompetent doctors on their way to outwit death and mend her broken heart.

Time: Early 1930s, during the Great Depression
Place: A tipsy shack within a Hooverville, along the Hudson River in New York. Several locations within Marcella’s dream.

Rag Dolly is written for a cast of 11 named characters and a minimum ensemble of 6, which can be expanded as needed. The story is women-led with an even representation of feminine and masculine roles. All characters can be played by any gender, so long as the actor is comfortable performing the character as written, including its pronouns and gender presentation. Vocal ranges are loose estimates. Rag Dolly is still in its workshop stages, and the keys of songs are subject to change and available to be modified.
